Hi, I’m JOSHUA CARTMELL (MELSH).

I am a freelance artist, performance designer and maker based in Leeds. After graduating from Nottingham Trent University with a BA in Fashion Knitwear Design and Knitted Textiles in 2021, I worked as a freelance knitwear and accessories designer. Around this time I began his journey into performance and worked closely with Leeds based choreographer John-William Watson on productions commissioned by Sadler’s Wells, 'This is not a Penguin' and 'Hang In There, Baby' as a designer and creative consultant. Since then I trained at Leeds Playhouse, supported by The Mackintosh Foundation as a costume maker, and since, have worked as a freelance performance designer with Northern Rascals (Reviving Her), The John Godber Company (The Highwayman, Black Tie Ball), Maiya Leeke (To Loss and Hope), John William Watson (Hang In There, Baby - NDC Wales, Rules For Safe Lifting, They Look Like People) and as a design associate for Ryan Dawson Laight (We Made A Mess - Far From The Norm).

Using his queer-centric, experimental graduation work SMALLTOWN BOY as a catalyst, Joshua established MELSH in 2021 - a design studio exploring the relationship between textiles, movement, design and performance; which he now works under as a freelance artist and practitioner.
